NXT OA Multiple-Choice Topics (OS, Systems, Complexity)

Problem Overview

The Citadel NXT online assessment (90 to 120 minutes) starts with multiple-choice questions, 8, 14, about 15 or a dozen or so depending on the report, followed by one or two coding problems. Reported multiple-choice topics:

  1. Complexity: several implementations of the same problem, asking which has higher or lower time or space complexity (one set compared three ways to find an array's maximum)
  2. Debugging: a short Python function with three candidate fixes, one of them correct
  3. Shuffles: three shuffle implementations in JavaScript; which are fair?
  4. Caching: cache management, write-back vs. write-through
  5. System design basics: push vs. pull, forward vs. reverse proxy, message queues, advantages of NoSQL, replica control
  6. OS, networking and concurrency basics: deadlock, locks
  7. Database questions

One commenter says the multiple-choice questions are much the same every year.

What Reports Emphasize

What passers do: One candidate found the multiple-choice section not very hard: university OS and distributed-systems material.; One candidate passed the OA without being sure how.

Edge cases probed: Which of three shuffle implementations are fair; Write-back vs. write-through caching; Forward vs. reverse proxy; Deadlock; Advantages of NoSQL; Replica control; Space-complexity differences between implementations of the same algorithm
