The Rippling loop, from candidate reports

Rippling's loop is built mostly on practical, multi-part coding rather than LeetCode. The phone screen is one problem that grows in parts, often on HackerRank, and the most reported by far is a delivery driver payment system: record deliveries and return the total cost, then pay up to a given time, then find the most drivers working at once in the past 24 hours. Other screens reported are a card-hand comparison game, a task manager that dedupes, filters and sorts tasks with parents, and a logger with independent handlers and keyword search. Several candidates passed with two parts working and the third talked through, though others were rejected after the same. Many coding rounds let you use an AI assistant, and interviewers then ask you to explain the code it wrote; one recruiter put the bar at all three parts with AI and two without. Onsite coding is in the same style, most often an expense rules engine with per-expense, per-trip and composite rules, plus an article voting service and a round that builds a small runnable web API, reported in loops through early 2026. System design, a phone-screen round on some loops and an onsite round on others, is most often a news aggregator, then a user event tracking system and a hotel booking system over third-party hotel APIs. Many loops include a hiring-manager round built around a short presentation of one past project.

What does Rippling ask in each interview round?

Rippling interviews span 4 distinct round types, broken down below. Counts reflect distinct questions per round, not number of times asked. Frequencies on individual question cards show how many candidates reported getting that specific question.

Practical coding in the same multi-part style: an expense rules engine, article voting with last flips and top k, a music player, a small runnable Q&A web API (reported through early 2026), and LeetCode-style rounds for interns.

One multi-part coding problem, often on HackerRank: delivery driver payment (the most reported), a card-hand comparison game, an expense rules engine, a task manager with dedupe, filter, sort and parent tasks, a logger with handlers and search, and for interns currency conversion.
5 questions

A news aggregator (the most reported), a user event tracking system with a real-time dashboard and a warehouse, a hotel booking system over third-party hotel APIs, and a centralised logging system.

Most-reported: Design a News Aggregator (Google News) (27 reports)
A hiring-manager round that opens with a short presentation of one past project and probes its trade-offs, metrics and your role, plus shorter behavioral questions in intern and coding rounds.

What passing candidates do
  • •Handling money carefully. Delivery driver payment reports keep returning to it: cents that must keep their fractions, totals returned to two decimals, and one candidate who was off by two cents.
  • •Designing for the next part. Interviewers ask for code that can take new rules, hand types or handlers, and later parts reuse what you built first.
  • •Discussing the return type and interface before coding, which the expense rules engine prompt asks for directly.
  • •Preparing a short slide deck for the hiring-manager round: candidates describe presenting one project with a few slides and then answering detailed questions about its trade-offs, metrics and your role.
Where candidates lose points
  • •Rounding each delivery to the cent before adding them up. On the delivery driver payment screen this turns a $30.30 total into $30.31.
  • •Counting deliveries instead of drivers in the concurrency part: the question asks for the most drivers working at once, so each driver's overlapping deliveries must be merged first.
  • •Spending the screen on the first part. Candidates who passed had at least two parts working, and one report says two are required.
